UpstreamForming Human Beings in the Age of the Machine

Every crisis we treat downstream — in the clinic, the classroom, the courtroom, the workplace — was shaped upstream, by whether anyone was formed to meet it. Upstream is the case that formation, not education, is the infrastructure a humane civilization runs on: the drawing-out of judgment, character, and the capacity to mean and make, which every earlier civilization built deliberately and ours spent a century dismantling.

The door is the age of the machine. As AI commoditizes everything codifiable, the scarce currency is exactly what formation produces — and the book documents a living movement that never stopped producing it, from Grundtvig’s folk schools through Highlander and the civil-rights movement to the revival now under way.

Universal architecture, particular vocation.

Formation builds the universal capacities every human needs — the directional, non-neutral architecture — within which each person discerns their own calling. The model is the midwife and the gardener, not the molder and the engineer. That one claim resolves the authoritarian shadow that has haunted every formation project.

The scarce currency is what formation makes.

Creativity has always been the currency; AI is the “box of people” that makes the substrate legible. Mētis is AI-irreducible. Mental health, meaning and loneliness appear in the book as evidence that the substrate-producing infrastructure failed — not as the headline.

A convergence, not a theory.

Cross-traditional convergence — Grundtvig, Iqbal, Frankl, Hahn, Tagore — with contemporary developmental science (Kegan, attachment, optimal frustration) and the programmes that work: Year Up, the ChalleNGe trial, Outward Bound, the Israeli mechina, the folk schools. And the history of what was dismantled between 1945 and 1969: Village Institutes, Highlander, Freire’s Brazil, the normales rurales.

Five movements, thirteen chapters

  1. Why now — The Currency · The Broken Mint
  2. What formation is — What Formation Is · The Seed and the Soil
  3. What we know — The Evidence · The Convergence · How Formation Works
  4. What we lost — The Cold War Destruction · How Education Forgot Formation, and Who Kept It Alive
  5. What we build — Beauty and Structure · The Model · The Objections · The Path Forward

The reading, and the rules the book holds.

  • Universal architecture, particular vocation.
  • The youth crisis is evidence, not the headline.
  • The model is the midwife and the gardener, not the moulder and the engineer.

The full edition-level bibliography lives with the manuscript.

The documented lineage — a real movement, not a model

  • N. F. S. Grundtvig and the Danish folkehøjskole — the origin of the form.
  • Myles Horton and the Highlander Folk School — The Long Haul; Horton & Freire, We Make the Road by Walking.
  • Septima Clark and the Citizenship Schools (Ready from Within); Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
  • The present-day folk-school revival.

The frame

  • The currency and the mint — what a community values, how it mints it, how the mint breaks; the generative-versus-extractive axis at the scale of institutions.
  • The convergence — Grundtvig, Iqbal, Frankl, Hahn, Tagore — with Kegan, attachment, and optimal frustration.

Not yet.

A passage will appear here when the book is closer to print. Until then, essays and notes surface in the Library.

The practice is the book applied one person, one organization at a time; the podcast asks the book’s question of the traditions that still answer it.
